Interview with Torrey Devitto(Melisaa)




Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?

A) I am currently working on a show that will air on my birthday, which is June 8th. It's called "Pretty Little Liars" and it is for ABC Family. I am also getting ready to play a role in the movie called The Right, which is exciting because it is filmed in Budapest.

Q) Please tell us about your character Melissa on the show "Pretty Little Liars."

A) Melissa is the antithesis of me. It was a lot of fun to play because a lot of the characters I do are "the indie-rock girl" or "the girl with the drug problem." Melissa is just very, very driven in everything she does. She's always getting good grades and she's the epitome of perfect. Everything has to be perfect. Anything that gets thrown at her that may be negative, she won't show that she's cracking. She'll pick up the pieces because it all has to be perfect. The character is almost relating to a perfect Southern belle debutante. She's really fun to play because I've never played anyone like that before.

Q) What made you want to be a part of the show?

A) I've met Bob Levy (the producer) before and I just think everything he does turns out really great. I read the script and really liked it. I thought it was very cool and a good script. Also, it films in L.A., which was shocking. Everything I've done for the last five years has shipped me out of L.A. So, I thought it was great. I liked the character and I said, "Definitely!" Once filming started, the girl who plays my sister (Troian Bellisario) turned out to be one of the most amazing people that I've ever met. She's really talented and incredible. The guy who played my fiancé, Julian Morris, is really awesome, too. It just worked out that I ended up working with really cool people that are really talented. It has been a really fun project to work on.

Q) Where do you draw from for your portrayal of Melissa?

A) Obviously, I had to find something in her that was me. People I've met in my life, especially growing up in Winter Park, FL have a personality that is composed, contained and upright. It's just meeting people along the way. If I can't find it in myself, I've met someone in my life that I can draw from.

Q) What have you found challenging about the role?

A) There is a part with Melissa where something kind of bad happens and it kind of crumbles in front of her a little bit. For me, as a person, I put all my emotions out on the table. If I'm not happy, you'll know it and if I cry, it's very emotional. She is way more upright than I am. So, doing the scenes where she is upset has been challenging for me because as Torrey I want to just scream, cry or tell someone off. She would have to stay way more contained, which is an interesting element to going into this role. I've never done that before.

Q) What has been your most memorable moment from filming "Pretty Little Liars?"

A) There is a lot of laughing and it is kind of like an abs workout, especially now that we've met the man playing Troian's and my father. His name is Nolan and he does voiceover work. His Christopher Walken impression is amazing. He would just draw from something every take. It was so hard to keep a straight face. Just the laughing has been my most memorable moment.
